UM students get to do some good thanks to ‘The Nanny’
Celebrity judge panel chooses group benefitting Argentinean slums for $5,000 prize
A group of University of Maryland, College Park, students might be too old for childcare, but they did appreciate some assistance from the nanny.
Fran Drescher, star of TV show “The Nanny,” and a panel of celebrity judges awarded $5,000 on April 10 as part of the “Do Good Challenge” to Argentine Terps, a student group working to aid residents of Argentinean slums.
The “Do Good Challenge,” now in its second year, is a university charity competition melding philanthropy with a format similar to the television series “American Idol,” giving student groups seven weeks to raise funds and awareness for the charity of their choice.
Five University of Maryland student teams each pitched their charitable causes and the work they have done to promote those causes to Drescher, nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis and Melanie Schnoll Begun, managing director of philanthropy management at Morgan Stanley.
Following the presentation, more than 400 audience members voted via text, and the judges determined first, second and third place from the top three teams.
