Fran Drescher is making it her life's mission to bring health to you and your home
The actor and producer has a new show that details her true-life experiences--she has a gay ex-husband.
Actress Fran Drescher kicks back at Robert, the restaurant at the Musem of Art and Design. Originally from Flushing, Drescher is all abouthealthy living, and helping others learn how to do the same.
Like her infectious voice and laugh, the actress knows how to make a memorable impression. Who could forget her as the publicist in "Spinal Tap?"
Running one household wasn’t enough for “The Nanny” actress-producer Fran Drescher. Now she wants to make noise in as many homes as she can.
Drescher, whose first film was “Saturday Night Fever,” has made it her life’s work to rid your house and body of cancer-causing toxins and foods.
Her Cancer Schmancer Movement empowers people to hold “Trash Cancer” Tupperware-type parties in their homes where invited guests and neighbors learn how to purge environments of harmful cleaning, food and beauty products. The charity, started by Drescher after she was diagnosed with stage 1 uterine cancer, is lobbying in Washington to pass a bipartisan bill placing “Non-Carcinogen” labels on healthy products.
“Not everyone went to MIT and can read an ingredient label,” says the Flushing-raised Drescher, sitting in a corner table overlooking Central Park at Robert, the ninth-floor restaurant at the Museum of Arts and Design at Columbus Circle. “The best cure for cancer is to not get it in the first place. We want to prevent cancer by eliminating the causes.”
Drescher was misdiagnosed by eight physicians before they discovered her cancer 12 years ago. Her best-selling book “Cancer Schmancer” details her life-changing experience.
So in part does her current television show. “Happily Divorced,” which airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on TV Land, is based on the true story of Drescher and ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson.
The two were sweethearts at Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, Queens. After earning a role opposite Jay Leno in “American Hot Wax,” the story of disc jockey Alan Freed,” Drescher, 20 at the time, moved from her parents’ house to Sherman Oaks, Calif. Jacobson joined her months later.
A married team, the two later conceived, wrote and produced “The Nanny,” a CBS hit for six seasons and now one of the most successful sitcoms in syndication.
While married, Jacobson told Drescher he might be bisexual. Unhappy in what she describes as a typical midlife crisis, Drescher asked for a separation. The two didn’t speak for a year. After Drescher got cancer, they reconciled as best friends. Soon a new sitcom was born.
In “Happily Divorced,” Drescher plays a florist working out of her garage; her gay ex-husband is a real estate agent (John Michael Higgins). Rita Moreno plays Drescher’s mother. Guest actors include Joan Collins, Robert Wagner and Cyndi Lauper.
“The emotions are accurate,” says Drescher. “It doesn’t matter your orientation, we all have the right to live authentic lives.”
Devoting energy and time to Cancer Schmancer is a priority. She is focused more on education and awareness than money; the idea is to spread the word. A mostly organic vegan who has rid her body and surroundings of harmful chemicals, Drescher lives the cause every day.
“I feel like I got famous and cancer, and I lived to talk about it for a reason,” she says “I think I was chosen to tell this story.”
A Queens girl at heart, Drescher views giving back as part of her life’s work. Her laugh is as hearty as ever. She’s also happily single, giving her plenty of time to focus on the cause.
“If you catch cancer on arrival, there is a 95% survival rate,” she says. “We can beat it. Without health you got nothing. Trust, me, I know.”
