You know it’s the holidays when so many of the stores pull out the holiday fragrance. Clove-like, cinnamon-like and pine-like is everywhere! I can’t tell you all the chemicals that make up these smells. That’s right, I’m not even sure what chemicals we are being exposed to because of trade secret laws. EWG tells us that whenever we see the word “fragrance” or “perfum” to read it as hidden chemicals. Some of the hidden chemicals in fragrance have known or have suspected links to reproductive toxicity, cancer, endocrine issues and other negative health effects.
It’s not worth it!! We need to advocate for our own health. Say NO to synthetic fragrance!! I promise you that once you stop wearing it and remove it from your environment you will notice a difference. Once you are free from harmful chemicals you will be blown away when you come into contact with them again. Most likely your nose will become a connoisseur and you will be able to recognize the real thing over the fake immediately. I am so rarely around the synthetic stuff anymore that when I do smell it it feels like an assault!
Throwing out the synthetic scents doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with smells. Nature has provided us with amazing smells. There are easy and wonderful ways to keep you and your home smelling wonderful for the holidays and through the year. If you buy a fresh Christmas Tree and love the smell of it there is a little secret to making the smell even stronger. If you look or feel on the trunk of the tree it has little blisters on it filled with the essential oils. You can take a spoon and gently scrape or pop these and the smell is truly divine! I usually break one open in the evening when we are around the tree and can enjoy it.
Fresh garland and wreaths always help to make the house smell of the holidays. I make my own mulling spice and it is so easy. I add cloves, cinnamon sticks and star anise to water, bring it to a boil and then let it simmer. It fills the house with a wonderful, cozy smell.
Lastly, you can always buy good quality essential oils and an atomizer to dispense them into the air. Essential oils are one of my favorite toxic free ways of setting the mood!! Essential oils can carry you through not only the holidays, but the year! I also use them on my body year round. Just make sure and read the label for usage and mix with a carrier oil!
Enjoy this holiday season and make it a toxic free one!
