It's National Women's Health Week!
Ladies, this week celebrates our bodies! (Hey, get your head out of the gutter!) The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health marked May 8 -14 as National Women’s Health Week.
As a uterine cancer survivor, health advocate, and above all else, a WOMAN, I can’t tell you how happy I am there’s a week dedicated just to us! As caregivers at home and at work, we often put everyone else’s needs above our own but I’m here to tell you we are no good to our loved ones if we put our health last! So this week and every week, become a medical consumer. It’s OUR time to listen to our bodies and take care of our physical and mental health. The U.S. Department of Health recommends:
- Getting at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both, each week
- Eating a nutritious diet
- Visiting a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings
- Avoiding risky behaviors, such as smoking and not wearing a seatbelt
- Paying attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress
Spread the word – even send a special e-card to the women in your life and help them take control of their health! http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw/activity-planning/e-card.cfm
Together, through prevention and early detection, we can live long and healthy lives!
