The Nanny Wants to Help You Host a Party That Could Save Your Life

A dozen years ago, Fran Drescher was diagnosed with cancer. Today, she’s heading a movement to make sure millions never get it at all. Following the success of her book Cancer Schmancer, Fran founded the Cancer Schmancer Movement, which aims “to shift the nation’s priority from searching for a cancer cure towards prevention and early detection of cancer.” She’s said,  “I got famous, then I got cancer, and now I live to talk about it.”

Turning Pain into Purpose

When I last interviewed Fran Drescher four years ago, she was a woman with a mission: As a cancer survivor who had been misdiagnosed and mistreated for two years before being accurately diagnosed with Stage I uterine cancer, Fran was determined to raise awareness about the value of early diagnosis. And she did. With the launch of the Cancer Schmancer Movement in 2007, Fran created an advocacy organization based on educating women about their health, their rights as patients, and their responsibilities to themselves and future generations....

Still Dictating Orders, This Time at the Altar

UNTIL quite recently, Fran Drescher was known primarily for her comedic roles on television, including her latest in “Happily Divorced,” in which she plays a woman who learns that her husband is gay, divorces him, but then remains a close friend of the man.

The show is, in fact, a comedic turn on the arc of her own 21-year marriage to Peter Marc Jacobson — one that has inspired Ms. Drescher, 54, to become a minister so that she can legally join gay and lesbian couples in marriage.
